OUR TOPIC
Jom Mamak is a podcast project started by a group of University of Nottingham Malaysia students to explore the numerous aspects of mamak culture in Malaysia. Since it is a culture familiar to us Malaysians, perhaps there are more to be discovered than what meets the eye. We dive deeper into the history and origin of mamak, as well as understanding its cuisine and how it is such a special place for not just tourists, but us Malaysians to hang out too. Is it because of the wide variety of food available in kedai mamak? Or is it because of the cheap pricing that everyone is able to afford?
While kedai mamak is a common place for Malaysians, there are also issues and controversies surrounding this type of eateries. Of course, being curious and kepoh as we are, we do our research and hoping to learn more about them.
Also, we wonder if kedai mamak will be able to evolve into something much more than it already is today. Will it one day be elevated into a place of fine dining? Will kedai mamak still be a safe place for Muslims if mamak eateries where pork is served already exists? What about the issues of cleanliness and migrant workers?
So many questions, and yet we thought we knew everything about mamak. Hope you join us on our journey in learning more about this unique Malaysian eatery.
