EPISODE 3

Lepak Sessions: Class and Space

In the third episode, Ilham looks into the characteristics of kedai mamaks and what makes them so appealing to customers.

One of the best things living in Malaysia is that we can still go to kedai mamaks if we ever get hungry at midnight. Plus, the price of mamak food is cheap and affordable considering the amount of food we get! As discussed from Episode 2, kedai mamaks also serve a variety of food with different cultural flavours. Of course, most Malaysians would consider kedai mamaks as one of the best places to lepak and hang around with friends as well because they are open 24/7.

To further understand the appeal of kedai mamaks, Ilham decided to look up on a few studies about the topic. There are several reasons to the popularity of the Malaysian eatery (see table below).

One interesting finding Ilham has found out during the research is that the casual environment and ambiance being one of the important factors Malaysian customers like to dine in kedai mamaks. Unlike fine dining, eating in kedai mamaks is not as restrictive in terms of eating etiquettes. Instead, we can eat freely, whether we eat using our hands or cutleries, and stay as long as we want while being able to talk freely. Due to the unrestrictive nature of dining experience, kedai mamaks are also popular amongst all Malaysians regardless of race. Being a place that unites Malaysian, certainly most of us have gone to kedai mamaks just to watch football matches or to watch Datuk Lee Chong Wei’s badminton matches.

While it is true that the casual atmosphere and affordability are some of the aspects that make what kedai mamaks are, Ilham wondered if there is a possibility of mamak evolving into a fine dining experience.
